Heating of Heavy Ions by Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection (ICME) Driven Collisionless Shocks

چکیده
Shock heating and particle acceleration processes are some of the most fundamental physical phenomena of plasma physics with countless applications in laboratory physics, space physics, and astrophysics. This study is motivated by previous observations of non-thermal heating of heavy ions in astrophysical shocks (Korreck et al. 2004). Here, we focus on shocks driven by Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs) which heat the solar wind and accelerate particles. This study focuses specifically on the heating of heavy ions caused by these shocks. Previous studies have focused only on the two dynamically dominant species, H and He. This study utilizes thermal properties measured by the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) aboard the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft to examine heavy ion heating. This instrument provides data for many heavy ions not previously available for detailed study, such as Oxygen (O, O), Carbon (C, C), and Iron (Fe). The ion heating is found to depend critically on the upstream plasma β, mass per charge ratio of the ion, M/Q, and shock magnetic angle, θBn. Similar to past studies (Schwartz et al. 1988), there is no strong dependence of ion heating on Mach number. The heating mechanism described in Lee & Wu (2000) is examined to explain the observed heating trends in the heavy ion thermal data. Studying geoeffective interplanetary coronal mass ejections between the Sun and Earth: Space weather implications of Solar Mass Ejection Imager observations
[1] Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) are the primary cause of severe space weather at Earth because they drive shocks and trigger geomagnetic storms that can damage spacecraft and ground-based systems. The Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) is a U. S. Air Force experiment with the ability to track ICMEs in white light from near the Sun to Earth and beyond, thus providing an extended...
متن کاملThe Composition of Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections
Interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) associated plasma can exhibit signatures in elemental, ionic and isotopic composition. These signatures occur in less than 50% of all ICMEs, but are very indicative of ICME plasma. We review these compositional anomalies and briefly discuss a physical scenario that could be responsible for these anoma-

We simulate and compare three phases of the Mars-solar wind interaction with the 8 March interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) event using Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission observations in order to derive heavy ion precipitation and escape rates. The MAVEN observations provide the initial conditions for three steady state MHDmodel cases, which reproduce the observed f...

We conclude the heliospheric image series with this third and final instalment, where we consider the physical implications of our reconstruction of interplanetary coronal mass ejections from heliospheric imagers. In Paper 1 a review of the theoretical framework for the appearance of ICMEs in the heliosphere was presented and in Paper 2 a model was developed that extracted the three-dimensional...

[1] We investigate the thermodynamic structure of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) using combined surveys of the ejecta between 0.3 and 20 AU. ICMEs are shown to have a moderate expansion in the solar wind compared with theoretical predictions. The expansion seems to be governed by a polytrope with g 1.3 in this distance range. We find that Coulomb collisions are important contribu...
